Fire Damage
Fire Damage Breaks Julie’s Heart
The fire damage was more extensive then she had imagined. Julie stood there in amazement at how massive the damage was. What used to be her two-story home was now a mass of charged rubble. There was barely anything left. She was able to dig through the mess and found a few family photos that some how escaped the fire. Tears ran down her face as everything she owned was gone. Everything she worked so hard to get disappeared in an instant. The fire did more than destroy her home. Her heart was now fired damaged as well.
How would she start over? Where would she even begin? Sure, she had plenty of friends and her family wasn’t far away but she was now among the homeless. Granted, she wouldn’t be living in the street but it still hurt just as bad. She had gone to the gym earlier that day and then had lunch with her friend Sara. It was a good day until she turned onto her street. As she came around the corner she saw a deep, black cloud rising into the sky. Fire trucks were everywhere. Police officers had the street partially blocked off. That’s when she saw it. The house on fire was hers.
Panic ran through her entire body. She stood by as the firefighters did what they were trained to do. When it was all said and done and the smoke had cleared, the house was gone. Not even a frame was left standing. Everything was gone. There wasn’t even a question as to how much fire damage was done because the house was history. The fire investigator came by and assessed the cause of the fire. It was an electrical short in her dryer. She had left that day and started the dryer so she could get a jump start on the laundry. That was a mistake she’d never make again.
“The fire damage is extensive Ma’am,” the investigator said to her, “We’ll label it as a total loss and caused by accident.”
He handed her a slip of paper with a big red stamp across it that read “Total Loss – Fire Damage.” She wept once again as she read at the words over and over again. The fire had gotten so hot it had even melted the rear lights on her neighbor’s car. At least she wasn’t home when it happened and she had her life. That was at least something to be thankful for. Now was the task of removing what was left from her home and rebuilding. She had a fire policy through her insurance company so fire damage was covered by that. There was some peace of mind. “Keep thinking happy thoughts,” she had to tell herself over and over again. If she didn’t she knew she’d cry. This was just a minor set back.
The fire damage was on the surface but her wounds ran deep. This too would pass. A few months went by and the site of what used to be her home still brought a tear to her eye. However, now she looked on with a smile. The fire damage was to her home and to her heart but now her heart was healing. It was healing because she met Jeff, a firefighter who tried to save her home and had now saved her heart.
